Buying a Used Electric Car? Here's What a Vehicle History Check Won't Tell You About the Battery

The average battery State of Health across more than 8,000 tested used electric cars is 95.15% of original capacity. That's the finding from the 2025 Battery Performance Index, and it's the most important number in the used EV market right now, because the fear keeping buyers away is, in most cases, not backed up by the data.

But you won't find that number in any vehicle history check. If you're buying a used EV without understanding what a history check covers, what it doesn't, and what extra step you need for the battery, you're making the biggest used car purchase of your life with half the picture.

What's Driving the Used EV Boom Right Now

In Q1 2026 alone, 86,943 used battery electric cars were sold in the UK, a 32% increase on the same period in 2025. Over the full year 2025, used EV transactions hit nearly 275,000, up 45.7% on the previous year.

Thousands of 2020 to 2022 lease returns are hitting the market at once, depressing prices and creating genuine bargains. A three or four year old EV that originally stickered at £40,000 is regularly selling for under £20,000. The risk, for buyers who don't do their homework, is paying for a bargain and getting a problem.

What Does a Vehicle History Check Cover on a Used EV?

Everything a history check covers on a petrol or diesel car applies equally to an electric one: outstanding finance, insurance write-off categories, stolen status, mileage discrepancies, plate changes, keeper history, and open recalls.

Those checks matter more than many buyers realise. DVLA data shows 562,185 vehicles were recorded as written off in 2024 alone, roughly one every 60 seconds. Over 61,000 vehicles were reported stolen in the UK that same year. Mileage fraud affects around 1 in 11 UK vehicles.

If you buy a car with outstanding finance against it, the finance company can legally repossess the vehicle. You lose the car and have no automatic right to a refund from the private seller.

For EVs specifically, a full vehicle history check can show whether a car has previously been recorded as a write-off and, where data is available, include the loss type and damage information. On an EV, a prior high-voltage incident, a serious collision or a fire, is exactly the kind of thing you want surfaced before you view, not after. A clean history report is your starting point. It is not a battery health report.

What Can't a History Check Tell You, and Why Does That Gap Matter More on an EV?

A vehicle history check tells you what happened to the car. It cannot tell you the current condition of the car's most valuable component.

The battery pack in a modern electric vehicle typically represents 30 to 40% of the car's original cost, according to McKinsey. On a car that cost £35,000 new, that's up to £14,000 worth of component, and a history check says nothing about its current health.

Mileage, a reasonable proxy for engine wear on a petrol car, is a much weaker predictor of battery condition. Two EVs with identical mileage can have very different battery health depending entirely on how they were charged and where they were driven.

Research by Startline Motor Finance found that 88% of used car buyers want an independent, certified assessment of a used EV's battery health before purchase. The same proportion want to know how the battery has been looked after by previous owners. And 81% want to know how much capacity has been lost since the car was new. The history check can't give them any of it.

What Does Battery Degradation Actually Mean?

State of Health, or SoH, is the number you're looking for. It compares the battery's current maximum capacity to its original rated capacity, expressed as a percentage.

A battery at 90% SoH retains 90% of its original range. On a car originally rated at 250 real-world miles, that's around 225 miles from a full charge. At 80% SoH, the same car delivers around 200 miles.

The 2025 Battery Performance Index from Generational analysed over 8,000 battery health assessments across 36 manufacturers and vehicles aged between zero and 12 years. The average SoH across all tested vehicles was 95.15%. Among four to five year old vehicles, the median SoH was 93.53%, with the bottom-performing bracket at 91.64%. Even vehicles aged eight to twelve years showed a median of 85.04%, comfortably above the 70% minimum threshold most manufacturers guarantee for eight years or 100,000 miles.

One finding that surprises most buyers: vehicles with over 100,000 miles on the clock often return 88 to 95% battery health. A three-year-old EV with 90,000 miles can have a healthier battery than a six-year-old with 30,000, depending entirely on how it was charged.

Geotab's analysis of real-world EV data found an average degradation rate of around 1.8 to 2.3% per year. At 2.3% annually, the average battery retains roughly 81.6% of its original capacity after eight years. For most buyers with normal daily driving needs, that's still a functional, usable battery.

What Does Charging History Tell You, and Why Does Keeper History Matter?

Not all use is equal. Two things accelerate battery degradation beyond the average.

Heavy reliance on DC rapid charging, typical of a car used for rideshare work or long-distance daily commuting, generates more heat cycling through the battery and can strain the thermal management system over time. Long periods parked at 100% charge in hot weather is also tough on lithium-ion chemistry. Most manufacturers recommend keeping daily charge levels between 20 and 80% unless you need the full range.

This is where keeper history from a vehicle history check becomes directly useful. Multiple short-term owners on a three or four year old EV, particularly if the gaps between them are short, is a reason to probe harder. It doesn't prove anything on its own, but it's a signal worth following up before you pay a deposit.

How Do You Actually Check Battery Health?

There's no single universal method, but there are three practical options depending on how much you want to spend and how confident you are doing it yourself.

Level 1: The dashboard or app check (free, at the viewing) Many EVs display a battery health or capacity indicator in the settings menu or through the manufacturer's app. This isn't always present and varies between manufacturers, but it's worth checking at the viewing. On a Nissan Leaf, the battery capacity bars are visible directly from the dashboard. On most other cars you'll need the app or a dealer connection.

Level 2: OBD-II diagnostic apps (low cost) A Bluetooth OBD-II dongle paired with an app like Leaf Spy (for Nissan), EV Battery Spy, or similar model-specific tools can read battery data directly from the car's onboard diagnostics. Costs typically run from £15 to £50 for the dongle. This gives you a direct SoH reading but requires some comfort with technology and varies in reliability between manufacturers.

Level 3: Independent certified battery health report (most reliable) Several UK companies now offer independent battery health certificates for used EVs. The report gives you a verified SoH reading, often alongside a breakdown of cell balance, charging behaviour, and any anomalies in the battery management system. Costs typically run between £100 and £200. For a car with a battery worth thousands of pounds, it's proportionate due diligence.

Always confirm whether the manufacturer's battery warranty is transferable to you as the new owner. On most major brands, it is, but verify before purchase, not after.

What Does Good, Acceptable, and Walk-Away Battery Health Look Like?

Above 90% SoH is excellent for a used EV of any age. Degradation has been minimal and real-world range will be close to what the car delivered when new. Buy with confidence if the history check is clean.

85 to 90% SoH is good and typical for a well-maintained EV in the two to four year old bracket. Expect a range reduction of around 10 to 15% compared to the car's original rating. Perfectly usable for most drivers.

80 to 85% SoH is acceptable, but factor it into your valuation. On a car with a large battery pack, 60kWh or more, this still leaves plenty of real-world range for daily driving. On a smaller-battery car like an older Nissan Leaf, you'd feel the reduction more noticeably.

Below 80% SoH warrants careful thought. Most manufacturers set their battery warranty threshold at 70 to 75% SoH. A battery below 80% on a car out of warranty means replacement costs could be coming. Battery replacement on a mainstream used EV can run anywhere from £5,000 to over £15,000 depending on the model and pack size.

Based on the Battery Performance Index data, most used EVs in the three to eight year old bracket will return SoH figures well above 80%. The average across the entire tested fleet was 95.15%. The fear around EV batteries is largely a perception problem, not a fleet-wide reality. But perception doesn't protect you from the individual car that's the exception. That's why you check.
