High Mileage vs Old Car: Which Is Actually Riskier to Buy?

A 4-year-old car with 90,000 miles, or a 10-year-old car with 40,000 miles. Which do you buy? Every major car site gives you the same answer: "it depends." That's not an answer. Here's an actual framework.

The number on the dashboard is only half the story

Mileage and age damage cars in completely different ways. Mileage wears out moving parts: brake pads, clutch plates, timing chains, gearbox synchros. Age attacks everything else: rubber hoses, seals, gaskets, brake fluid, and electronics, whether the car moves or not.

A 10-year-old car with 30,000 miles hasn't been "preserved" by sitting still. It's been quietly deteriorating in ways that won't show up on a quick test drive.

Not all miles are equal

City driving is genuinely hard on a car. Every time you brake and accelerate in stop-start traffic, you're stressing the brakes, shifting the transmission up and down, and forcing the engine to idle at low RPM. Low RPM means reduced oil pressure, which means more wear on internal engine parts.

Motorway driving is the opposite. Steady cruising speeds keep oil pressure consistent, engine temperatures stable, and transmission shifts to a minimum. According to a Minnesota Department of Transportation study, city driving increases vehicle operating costs by 3.9 cents per mile compared to highway driving. That cost difference reflects real mechanical wear.

A car with 100,000 motorway miles will often show less wear than one with 50,000 city miles. That's what mechanics see when they strip these cars down.

How to tell city miles from motorway miles without a mechanic

MOT advisory records are the most useful tool. Repeated advisories for brake wear, suspension wear, or tyre condition across multiple MOT cycles are the signature of a city-driven car. A motorway car's MOT history tends to be cleaner.

Keeper history tells you a lot too. A car with one or two long-term keepers who covered high annual mileage is often an ex-fleet or company car that spent its life on the motorway. Multiple short-term keepers with erratic mileage patterns is a different story.

Annual mileage consistency matters. If a car covered 15,000 miles one year, 8,000 the next, and 3,000 the year after, that pattern is worth investigating.

The bodywork itself is a clue. Rock chips and bug splatter on the front end suggest motorway use. Door dings, curb scrapes, and scratches on the lower sills point to city driving.

What are the UK mileage benchmarks?

Most content on this topic quotes American figures. Ignore them. The US average is 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year. UK drivers average just 7,100 miles per year, according to the Department for Transport's National Travel Survey published in August 2025.

The practical formula for UK buyers: multiply the car's age by 7,000 to get the expected mileage.

Fuel type shifts the baseline too. In 2024, the average annual mileage was 6,200 for petrol cars, 8,300 for diesels, and 8,000 for hybrids. A 6-year-old diesel with 48,000 miles isn't high mileage. It's average.

If a car's mileage is significantly below these figures, that's not automatically good news. It's a flag that needs explaining.

When is low mileage actually the danger sign?

A fastidiously maintained 10-year-old car with 150,000 miles can be a far better buy than one the same age with 30,000 miles that spent years sitting on a driveway. Cars are designed to be driven. When they're not, things go wrong quietly.

Rubber seals and hoses dry out and crack. Without regular heat cycles, the rubber in coolant hoses, cam belt covers, and gaskets hardens and perishes. These failures don't announce themselves gradually.

Brake components corrode. Moisture gets into brake lines, callipers, and pistons. In a well-used car, this gets flushed through. In a car that sits, it builds up. Seized callipers and corroded brake lines are common on low-mileage cars.

Tyres degrade by age, not just tread. A car with 30,000 miles on 10-year-old tyres may have plenty of tread depth but be genuinely unsafe. Tyre rubber hardens after five to six years and becomes more prone to cracking and failure. Manufacturers recommend replacement regardless of tread depth.

Flat spots form on standing tyres. A car parked for months develops uneven patches where the tyre contacts the ground. You'll feel it as a vibration at speed. Sometimes it drives out. Sometimes it doesn't.

Batteries fail. Deep discharge damages cells permanently. A low-mileage car that hasn't been regularly started and driven will often need a new battery immediately.

DPF problems on diesels are particularly nasty. Diesel particulate filters clean themselves by burning off accumulated soot at high temperatures, which only happens at sustained motorway speeds. A diesel used mainly for short local trips never reaches the conditions needed for this regeneration. A replacement DPF can cost over £1,000 fitted.

Suspiciously low mileage on an older car should also raise the possibility of clocking. An MOT history check will show every recorded mileage figure, and any drop between tests is an immediate red flag.

What does age do that mileage can't?

Even a well-used, regularly serviced car faces age-related issues that have nothing to do with miles covered.

Cam belts are replaced on a schedule measured in years as well as miles. A belt that's seven years old may be within its mileage limit but past its age limit. The consequences of it snapping are catastrophic on most engines.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and should be replaced every two years regardless of mileage. Old brake fluid has a lower boiling point, which means brake fade under heavy use.

Electronics age. Connectors corrode. Sensors fail. The older the car, the more likely you'll encounter fault codes, intermittent electrical gremlins, and worn-out components.

A high-mileage car that's been properly serviced will have had fresh fluids, new belts, and working components throughout its life. An older low-mileage car may never have had those services on mileage grounds, but still needed them on age grounds.

The history report is where you settle this

Check the mileage recorded at every MOT against the test date. Calculate the annual mileage between each pair of tests. Look for consistency, gaps, and sudden drops.

A car with a full service history, consistent annual mileage, and clean MOT records is a far better prospect than one where half the service stamps are missing and the mileage jumps around. The ideal buy is a 3 to 6-year-old car with mileage close to the UK average for its fuel type, consistent mileage year-on-year, a full service history, and an MOT record that doesn't repeat the same advisories every year. High annual mileage from a single long-term keeper, especially a company or fleet vehicle, often clears the bar too.

What you're trying to avoid is the 12-year-old car with 35,000 miles, four different keepers, no service history, and a timing belt that's never been changed because the mileage never triggered the service interval.
